Teeth Drift for Life
Teeth are held by living tissue that keeps remodeling long after treatment ends. Without retention, they slowly wander back toward their old positions, whether your braces came off last year or twenty years ago.
The Three Types of Retainers
Clear retainers are nearly invisible and easy to wear. Fixed retainers are thin wires bonded behind your front teeth that work with zero effort. Hawley retainers are the classic wire-and-acrylic style, famously durable and adjustable. Many patients do best with a combination of two.
Your Simple Wear Routine
Full-time wear for a short stretch after treatment, then nights only, indefinitely. Nightly wear becomes as automatic as brushing within a few weeks, and it's the single biggest predictor of a smile that still looks perfect decades from now.
Caring for Your Retainer
Rinse it with cool water, brush it gently without toothpaste and keep it in its case whenever it's out of your mouth. Heat and lunchroom napkins are the two great retainer killers. Clear retainers typically last one to three years, and replacements are quoted before anything is made.
If Your Teeth Have Already Shifted
Don't force an old retainer that no longer fits. Minor relapse often needs only a short aligner touch-up, then fresh retainers. A quick scan gives you an honest read on where things stand, even if you were treated somewhere else.
